Monsoon season is a welcome relief in southern Arizona — right up until the mosquitoes show up. Within days of a good storm, standing water turns into breeding habitat, and a yard that was perfectly comfortable becomes somewhere you don't want to sit after sunset.
Why Mosquitoes Explode After a Storm
Mosquitoes need standing water to complete their life cycle. Depending on the species and temperature, they can go from egg to biting adult in as little as a week. That means a single monsoon storm can produce an entirely new generation of mosquitoes in your neighborhood before the puddles even dry out.
The frustrating part is how little water it takes. Mosquitoes don't need a pond. A bottle cap, a folded tarp or a clogged gutter will do.
Rule of thumb: If water sits still for more than four days, it can produce mosquitoes. Eliminating standing water is the single biggest thing you control.
Where to Look After a Storm
Walk your property a day or two after rain and check these common breeding sites:
- Clogged gutters and downspouts — one of the most overlooked sources on any home.
- Plant saucers and drip trays — under potted plants, they hold water for weeks.
- Tarps, wheelbarrows and buckets — anything that catches and holds a puddle.
- Low spots and poor drainage — areas where water pools and stays long after the storm.
- Pet water bowls and bird baths — refresh them regularly rather than letting them sit.
- Irrigation and A/C condensate lines — slow drips create permanent damp spots.
Reduce the Habitat, Then Treat What's Left
Dumping standing water is step one, and it works — but it only addresses what's on your property. Adult mosquitoes fly in from neighboring yards, retention basins and natural drainage areas. That's why source reduction alone rarely gives you a comfortable yard.
A professional yard treatment targets the adult mosquitoes where they rest during the day — in shaded foliage, under eaves, along fence lines and in dense landscaping. Treating those resting sites dramatically cuts down the population in the areas you actually use.
Season-Long vs. One-Time Treatment
Mosquito pressure in our area builds through monsoon season and persists well after the last storm. A single treatment gives you a window of relief, but mosquitoes will move back in. Ongoing service — typically monthly through the season — keeps a barrier in place so you're not starting over every few weeks.
More Than a Nuisance
Mosquitoes are the most medically significant insect in the world, and Arizona has species capable of transmitting disease. Even setting health concerns aside, itchy bites make outdoor space unusable — especially for kids and anyone who reacts badly to bites.
